Comments:
To have a successful Thanksgiving Feast, there are many "behind the scenes" volunteer opportunities -
especially those that occur before the actual event.  Some of these are projects that various groups will offer up
- from creating centerpieces to collecting items that are passed on, to guests who attend the event.

As we draw closer to Thanksgiving Day, two specific volunteer opportunities begin to evolve - food collectors
and kitchen preparations.  Below you will find information as it pertains to each opportunity.  To volunteer,
simply fill out the form and submit it to The Giving Heart.
A return email from us will confirm your participation in
a particular volunteer role
.

Food Collection  (Youth Permitted)

To help keep costs down for our Thanksgiving Feast, we conduct a food drive at an area food store.  This event
will occur on Thursday, November 20, 2008 from 10 am until 10 pm - location to be determined, but usually
around the West End or Northside area.  Volunteers are needed to pass out our shopping list to shoppers,
accept food donations, and to help organize the donations into a POD that has been provided for this
opportunity.  This is a wonderful opportunity for youth involvement (accompanied by an adult).  Daytime
volunteers are especially needed.

Food Preparations  (No Youth Permitted - Adults Only)

A popular volunteer need is to help with preparing our Thanksgiving meal.  Chef Flip and Chef Davis invite
cooking pros and novices, to join them on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week, as they
begin the process of creating enough food to serve 3000 people.  A variety of help is needed - from preparing
the turkeys for the oven, creating the stuffing, slicing the turkey, to helping with kitchen clean up.  Food prep
hours usually run between 9 am and 3 pm and are subject to change and/or cancellation as the meal progresses
over the 3 days of preparation.  Volunteers are asked to be available for a 3-hour time frame.

Opportunities will also be available for food preparation duties on Thanksgiving Day.  Those volunteering at the
Greater RIchmond Convention Center are reminded that free parking will be available in the 3rd and Marshall
Street parking deck.  We recommend parking on the 3rd floor for easy access into the kitchen area.  Please limit
personal belongings as the kitchen does not provide adequate space.  We cannot be responsible for lost or
stolen personal belongings.

Kitchen Coordinator (Adult Only)

Are you organized?  Do you like to run errands or give direction?  We need a kitchen coordinator to oversee the
needs of our 3-day preparation as well as those on Thanksgiving Day.  Coordinator will check in volunteers,
notify helpers of any changes to the schedule, be available to procure last-minute food items and assist the
chefs' where necessary.  Must be available Monday through Thursday of Thanksgiving week or be able to
ensure that adequate coverage has been set up for kitchen needs.
