In 2006, The Giving Heart was given the opportunity to re-launch an annual Richmond tradition -
the Community Thanksgiving Feast. In two years, over 1500 volunteers have given of
themselves in creating a successful event. While fortunate to have many returning volunteers,
we follow the philosophy of "first come, first assigned" to the majority of our volunteer needs.
To have a core group of people that can help maintain the structure needed in the success of
the Community Thanksgiving Feast, is fantastic. To always open our doors to others is even
better. Due to the huge interest in this event, we encourage you to apply ASAP.
Several things are worth mentioning to those who are interested in participating as a volunteer:
- Volunteer opportunities for youth are restricted to positions marked accordingly. All youth
must be accompanied by an adult.
- A mandatory orientation/training session (shortly before the seating time) will be required of
all Thanksgiving Day positions. Failure to appear may cause forfeiture of volunteer duties.
- Volunteer needs exist for Pre-Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving Day.
- Volunteer roles are subject to change and/or cancellation. We make every effort to identify
the number of volunteers needed, but work flow and/or number of guests will sometimes
dictate the fulfillment of various roles.
- Free parking is available at the Greater Richmond Convention Center's parking deck, located
at 3rd and Marshall Street. We are not responsible for those that park elsewhere.
- A secure and dedicated coat check room will be available to all volunteers. We ask that you
refrain from bringing purses or other valuables into the facility.
- Those present at The Giving Heart's Community Thanksgiving Feast are giving permission
for any photography occurring by media and/or The Giving Heart.
Please set spam programs to allow for emails from thegivingheart.org. This allows us to relay
information and to send confirmations to all volunteers.
A note about groups: Due to the overwhelming number of potential volunteers, group sign ups
are restricted to two volunteer areas - kitchen preparation and table hosting. If your group
wants to sit together, you can submit one application form. Such requests must be accompanied
by all names and the number of tables requested (4 tables maximum). We cannot hold tables to
be filled in at a later time. Because we work on a first come, first assigned basis, we suggest
that groups simply refer members to our website to submit individual application forms instead
of trying to organize a group setup. Groups who desire more involvement are strongly
encouraged to check out our project and donations page here.
